The Department of Agricultural Botany has excellent well equipped modern facilities for efficiently teaching various courses related to Genetics & Plant Breeding, Biotechnology, Crop Physiology, Environmental Sciences & Seed Technology as required for B.Sc. (Agri.) degree. Department is engaged in imparting theoretical as well as practical knowledge to the students. Department is actively involved in the RAWE programme to share knowledge and create awareness among farmers and seed production programme under module to give actual practical knowledge to students.

Current Population of India is estimated to be more than 1.27 billion. India is the most densely populated country in the world after China but it would be at the top position within 2040 years. It would be very difficult to feed such a huge population in the future. In this context knowledge of agricultural botany will be useful to increase the production.

Dr. Mansing Yashwantrao Patil is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding at Dr. D. Y. Patil College of Agriculture, Talsande, Kolhapur, Maharashtra. He has been serving the institution since January 2018, actively contributing to undergraduate teaching, research, student mentoring, and academic administration.

Dr. Patil completed his B.Sc. (Agriculture) from Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth (MPKV), Rahuri in 2009 with First Class, followed by M.Sc. (Agriculture) in Genetics and Plant Breeding from Dr. Balasaheb Sawant Konkan Krishi Vidyapeeth (DBSKKV), Dapoli in 2012. He earned his Ph.D. (Agriculture) in Genetics and Plant Breeding from DBSKKV, Dapoli in 2017 with First Class with Distinction. He also holds a Diploma in Agriculture Journalism from YCMOU, Nashik, and is proficient in computer applications through MS-CIT.

His M.Sc. research focused on heterosis and combining ability studies in chilli (Capsicum annuum L.), while his doctoral research investigated combining ability for yield and yield-related traits through interspecific hybridization in cowpea (Vigna unguiculata). His research interests include plant breeding, genetics, hybridization, crop improvement, seed production, and varietal development.

Before joining academia, Dr. Patil worked as a Technical Assistant (Breeding) at the Nimbkar Agricultural Research Institute, Phaltan, where he was involved in AICRP trials and data analysis. He also served as a Junior Research Assistant under the PPV&FRA Project at DBSKKV, Dapoli, contributing to germplasm collection, characterization, and PPV&FRA registration activities.. He is a life member of the Indian Society of Plant Breeders and the Agriculture Doctorates Association.

Apart from teaching and research, he has held several important academic and administrative responsibilities, including Chief Counsellor, Coordinator of the Staff Academy Lecture Series, Principal’s Nominee for Student Interaction Sessions, and Coordinator of the Student Experiential Learning Programme on Seed Production.

Through his dedication to quality education, research, and student development, Dr. Mansing Y. Patil continues to contribute significantly to agricultural education and the advancement of Genetics and Plant Breeding.
