Under this department we offer courses of Horticulture for the undergraduate degree programme in the faculties of Agriculture. This is a specialized branch of agriculture dealing with Fruit production, vegetable production, landscaping and commercial floriculture, medicinal and aromatic plants and plantation crops. This department mainly concern with land preparation, seeds and sowing, fertilizer management, irrigation scheduling, plant protection, harvesting and threshing, seed production and their processing. Department of Horticulture, in the Dr. D. Y. Patil College of Agriculture, Talsande is a huge department, carrying out teaching activities. The staffs are actively involved in conducting teaching, on-farm activities, educational tours, which make the students be well versed with the subject.
Every day, everyone is affected by horticulture. The fruits and vegetables you eat, each and every day we eat the vegetable and the drinks like tea and coffee. Also the use of herbal medicinal plants in pharmaceutical industries and use of aromatic plants in cosmetic industries. The brief information about all of these is given in Horticulture. Horticulture is the science deals with the study of production technology of fruits, vegetables, flowers, plantation crops, aromatic and medicinal plants. In horticulture, its important to understand the properties of the soil and how the soil interacts with the growing crop; what nutrients (fertilizers) the crop needs and when and how to apply these nutrients; the ways that crops grow and develop; how climate and other environmental factors affect the crop at all stages; and how best to control weeds, insects, fungi, and other crop pests. Department of Horticulture, in the College of Agriculture, Talsande is a huge department, carrying out teaching activities. The staffs are actively involved in conducting teaching, on-farm activities, educational tours, which make the students be well versed with the subject. |
Dr. Siddhi Ravindra Patil is an accomplished agricultural academician and researcher specializing in Horticulture (Floriculture and Landscaping). She currently serves as an Assistant Professor at Dr. D.Y. Patil College of Agriculture, Talsande, Kolhapur, where she leads key undergraduate coursework and shapes student development programs.
Dr. S. R. Patil earned her Bachelor’s from College of Agriculture Rajmachi, Master’s from college of Agriculture Nagpur and Doctoral degrees in Horticulture from the prestigious Dr. Balasaheb Sawant Konkan Krishi Vidyapeeth (Dr.BSKKV), Dapoli. Demonstrating academic excellence throughout her scholastic journey, she secured a distinction in his doctoral studies and was honored with the competitive Doctoral Fellowship from SARTHI, Pune. Her core research work during Ph.D is on “Standardization of growing conditions and media for growing roses and evaluation of rose varieties (Rosa indica) under agroclimatic conditions of konkan region.”
An active contributor to the wider scientific community, Dr. S.R.Patil has authored over 17 research papers in peer-reviewed national and international journals and holds lifetime memberships in prestigious scientific bodies, including SADHANA, ADA, ISASTR, SABSR society. She recently publishes her book named Textbook on fundamentals of horticulture. Driven by a strong belief in bridging the gap between scientific laboratories and actual fields, she has actively participated in advanced institutional training programs and participated in webinar also.
